Movie Night at St. Andrew's Church - LETTERS TO GOD

On the 1st March evening after youth gathering, some of our youths have attended the movie night at St. Andrew's Church to attend their movie night. The movie they watched was called - Letters To God

Summary:
The story of what happens when one boy's walk of faith crosses paths with one man's search for meaning-the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them. Tyler Doherty is an extraordinary eight-year-old boy. Surrounded by a loving family and community, and armed with the courage of his faith, he faces his daily battle against cancer with bravery and grace. To Tyler, God is a friend, a teacher and the ultimate pen pal-Tyler's prayers take the form of letters, which he composes and mails on a daily basis. The letters find their way into the hands of Brady McDaniels, a beleaguered postman standing at a crossroads in his life. At first, he is confused and conflicted over what to do with the letters. But the decision he ultimately makes becomes a testament to the quiet power of one boy's shining spirit and unshakable faith.

Youth Fellowship 1st March 2014

On the first day of March, usually people will spend it by doing "awesome" things. However, we YFG had also did something more awesome than anything else - OUR YOUTH FELLOWSHIP!

A photo of the environment of the youth on the first day of March. p.s. Nice pose Asthorrr!

On this day, our programme was to watch few videos on " DAB IN THE HOLY LAND 2014" This is a story of from Brian Hardin's Blog on Living As If The Bible Is True. If you are interested, you can have a look on it :)

Chinese New Year Youth Fellowship Celebration @ Uncle Chris's House!

Today is the day when we have our very first Chinese New year celebration as a youth group. It was held at Uncle Chris's house and Auntie Inju and her sister cooked us some awesome Korean food which you can then see below.

Environment in Uncle Chris's House

But before we had our food, we had BIG Ivan Lee to lead us in some awesome games - such as The Push Up Games, The Dancing Game and also a game called A THOUSAND DOLLAR in which everyone was given 5 coins each and they have to go around to play with each other either on Paper Scissors Rock, Thumb Wrestling or Coin Flip! The winner would then have to collect one coin each time he/she wins from the loser!

Small Ivan giving testimony
After that, we had small Ivan Lee once again lead us in a conversation of sharing by the overseas youths - Larissa, Big Ivan and also himself on how have God changed their lives. Their testimony are awesome! A lot of things might happen in the outside world that sometimes we may fall into temptation, but because God loves us, He will always gives us strength to get up once again as long as you believe in Him!

Take 1!
After the sharing and praying, then only small Ivan told us that he will be leaving back to Melbourne the next day. So we decided to take a group photo! Such an awesome photo! Well.. I was being said by Auntie Laura that my leg in the above photo tends to be the CHICKEN WING OF THE YEAR!

Take 2!
Below are JUST some pictures of the food that we've eaten at Uncle Chris's house and also the fellowship time!. All food are home-cooked! Thank you Uncle Chris and Auntie In Ju for your kind hospitality!

Auntie Laura with BIG IVAN!
Jeremy is being cool EVEN taking food. HAHA!

First Sharing Session from the overseas youths

07th February 2014, which is the 8th Day of Chinese New year 2014, we resumed our youth fellowship. We had the youths from overseas to lead us - BIG Ivan Lee, Small Ivan Lee & Wilson Lee. WOW! All the 'Lee's HAHAHA!

SMILE!

Anyway, the number of youths who attended that day was amazing! God has been good all these time! Firstly, we had Ivan to lead us in a game - electric shock! In which everyone is divided into two lines and all of them has to face the front except from the first two. Ivan will toss a coin and if it's head, they will start to squeeze the hand of the person in front of them and the last person will have to take the pen!

Get the pen!

The pen is situated on a chair and whoever got the pen first will be the winner! Such an awesome game! Check out my instagram @Willollogy to check out the video that I've taken from the game itself! Thank you BIG Ivan Lee for such an awesome ice-breaking game!

Last Round! Get the pen from my hand then you are the winner!

Apparently, the score was quite close! Match point is 5 and both teams managed to get 4-4 in which made the last round even more interesting. To make things more interesting, I sat down on the chair and began to hold the pen. The other thing that I did was I pushed the chair backward so that the person at the last had to run to get the pen! Apparently at the end, one group won of course! I won't say who but you know who you are! :P

Stole this photo from Wilson Lee's FB :P

At the second part of the day, we had small Ivan Lee to act as an emcee and question the other two overseas youths about their life and their walk with God. Follow up with that, we had Wilson Lee to share with us about Experiencing God!

EXPERIENCING GOD

S God wants us to walk with Himexperience Him daily in our lives.

1 Cor 2:10 The moment we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells in us to reveal God to us.
S Apart from the Holy Spirit, we cannot understand the things of God.

Jn 4:24
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jn 4:24 says that God is Spirit and we can’t see God through our physical eyes or natural senses.

1 Cor 2:14 Only spiritual people understand spiritual things.
- Spiritual people see the plan + purpose of God in their spirit.
- They can hear the voice of God + follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Therefore we need to exercise + develop our spiritual senses if we want to experience + understand God.

OUR SPIRITUAL SENSES

There are 3 spiritual senses that we need to develop?

1. Spiritual EYES.

It is not our physical eyes. We all have natural eyes but we can’t see God with them.
S We need spiritual eyes to see spiritual things.

Rev 3:17-18 Here, Jesus was speaking about the Laodicean church.

They are Christians who say they are wealthy and in need of nothing.
S They attend church, are involved in ministry and evangelize ... but Jesus says they are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, naked.
S Why? Because their spiritual senses are closed toward God.

Many people’s spiritual eyes are blind, that is why they never see or experience God.
S God exists in their mind, but they have never experienced Him tangibly!

Paul loved the Ephesian church and prayed for the believers there. But what did Paul pray for the Ephesians?

Eph 1:16-18 Paul prayed that God would open their spiritual eyes so that they could understand:
a. The hope of God’s calling.
b. The riches of the glory of His inheritance.
c. The mighty power of God that is in every believer.

All these are spiritual blessings in the Spirit realm.
S But it is also for every believer who lives on the earth right now!

2. Spiritual EARS.

Rev 3 When Jesus spoke concerning the 7 churches in Revelation ... “Those who have ears, let them hear.”
S We need our spiritual ears to hear God’s voice.

2 Cor 12:1-4 Paul was caught up into 3rd heaven and heard inexpressible words.

3. Spiritual DISCERNMENT.

It is very much like “perceiving” ...

Lk 9:47
“And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him.”

Acts 27:10 Paul was able to discern or perceive a storm coming, a danger about to happen.

It is like the relationship between a husband & wife.
S After living together for some time, you can perceive or discern if your spouse is happy, or troubled, etc.
So the closer you walk with God, the more you will be able to sense Him in your spirit.

HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT RELATE TO US + LEAD US?

1. He quietly IMPRESSES.

We see this from Elijah’s example: the quiet whisper.
S This is basically when you just get an impression toward something.
S It could be in your mind ... or in your emotion.

Mk 2:8 NOTE: It was spiritual perception or impression.

Acts 14:9 How do you see faith? (It is through perception!)

[CGL, give your personal example: It can be about how you learn to discern people, the good and bad.]

2 Cor 5:16 We don’t regard “in the flesh” = We don’t just see the outward appearance.
S We learn to know people by the Spirit.
2. He PROMPTS gently.

Mt 4:1
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”

NOTE: The Holy Spirit leads, He doesn’t drive!

This is when you “feel led” or you feel a “good prompting” by the Holy Spirit to do something!
- I’ve found that if I’m walking right with God (not self-righteously, or out of selfish ambition) ... very often, my desire is His desire.

[CGL, give your personal example: It can be about how you were prompted to call someone or reach out to someone.]

3. He STIRS us up.

Acts 17:16 This usually has to do with our feelings.
S The Holy Spirit lets us experience how God Himself feels.

Usually, it comes as a burden or sometimes a holy indignation.

Hab 1:1-2
“The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. O LORD, how long shall I cry ...”

Lam 2:11 (Jeremiah receiving a burden from God:)
“My eyes fail with tears, my heart is troubled; my bile is poured on the ground because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the children and the infants faint in the streets of the city.”

Sometimes, the Holy Spirit gives us good burdens: they won’t break us ... they’re easy to carry.
S But they will stir us up to pray ... to intercede ... to do something for God’s kingdom.

[CGL, give your personal example: It can be about how you feel a burden for something and you prayed fervently and how God gave you an answer.]

4. He moves our CONSCIENCE.

Col 3:15 Let the peace of God “rule” = to be an umpire.

The “peace in your heart” is like an umpire, a referee.
S So the Holy Spirit can lead us through our conscience, the “peace” or “no peace” that we sense in our heart.

Now, the problem here is that our conscience must be kept clean + pure at all times.
S Otherwise, it can become contaminated + damaged.
S It can become seared ...

1 Tim 4:1-2
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.”

! You read interviews with rapists, murderers, drug abusers, serial killers.
S Don’t they feel something the 1st time they do it? Yes!

But as they suppress that “voice” in their conscience ... with violent movies + mind-numbing music ...
S After a while, the voice in the conscience is gone.
S All they hear is: “Just do it---kill (3x) ... rape (3x)!”

5. He REMINDS us of Scriptures.

Jn 14:26 (Jesus:)
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

[CGL, give your personal example: It can be about how you didn’t know what is right or how to counsel and you read the Bible and found a Scripture.]

ALTAR CALL

Have a practical spiritual lesson-cum-ministry for your members.

Lead the CG in a time of worship to usher in the presence of God.
- Then pair up your members and encourage them to hear from God + exercise the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The members can be led by the Spirit ...
1. To pray for one another.
2. To share an impression they feel about the person they are praying for.
3. To share a Scripture for the person they are praying for.

Encourage everyone to try + assure them it is a practice session.

- Make sure you appreciate + encourage everyone for trying!

Celebrating CNY + Uncle Teck Nyek Birthday

On the 6th February 2014, co-incidently all the youths happened to gather at Uncle Ronnie & Auntie Peck's residence for so called "Open House". Apparently, on that day, it was also Uncle Teck Nyek's Birthday. So everyone gathered around and the night was emcee by Ivan Lee with some games and some sharing, followed up with sharing by Uncle Ronnie, the house master. It was a great moment to be remembered and it is just awesome to see all the youths, including the overseas youths to be back with us in Brunei to celebrate Chinese New Year!

Everyone listen carefully while Ivan is sharing

Apparently on that day itself, it was also the day in which the GCE 'O' and 'A' Level result was release. When you see around the youths, you tend to see some with happy faces and some with not so happy faces. However, we just have to believe that God will always make a way... when there's seem no way. Amen!

Youth Gathering - 24th January 2014

Pastor Bill Duncan from Hawaii sharing with the youths today at youth gathering

Q: How are we created?

A: We are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27 - So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.)

Simply because we are created in God's image, we have the responsibility to talk and be like God.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:19
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

Reflection:

There are times that we think that we can do what ever we want to do. This is my body. I can do as I pleased. But...
We have to remember that: We are not our own. Our body is loan to us by our creator.

We need to prayerfully allow the Holy Spirit to lead our life. Our body is the temple of God.
Where ever we go, whatever we do, We have to remember that Holy Spirit is in us and we have to protect our body to destroy our body - the temple of God.

Listening while Pastor Bill is sharing

Ephesian 6: 1-3

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honour your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise-- "so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."

This is a promise that God gave to every single of His believer. Yes. Sometimes the things that our parents say may not be right or relevant to us, but we are obligated to be their children and to obey them and respect them while we are still living on earth.

WATCH YOUR LIFE:

W - Watch your WORDS!
When you get angry at someone, words might come out then you might regret it for as long as you live. You can never take back the words once you say it out.

A - Watch your ACTIONS!
Watch how you act or react.

T - Watch your THOUGHTS!
The way we think about things. When you think of what you think in your heart, that's how you gonna live your life.

C - Watch your COMPANIONS!
Who you hang out with, They can either build you up or they can tear you down. They can encourage you to be strong or they can call you to let your God down. Peer pressure.

H - Watch your HABITS!
Drinks, Tobacco, Drugs, Pornography, etc.

Whatever you do, just remember that: God is either feel honoured, or heart-broken!

Bible Study 1: Feeling Guilty? - 10th January, 2014

Background Scripture:
Psalm 32; 1 John 1:1-10

Focal Scripture Text:
Psalm 32:1-5; 1 John 1:8-10

Main Idea When we confess our sins to God, God forgives and frees us from our guilt.

Life Question How do I deal with the guilt I feel?

_______________________________________________________________

What the Bible Says

Background

Psalm 32 was obviously written by someone who knew the devastating effects of not confessing one’s sin. Some traditions consider the psalm to have been written by David after his affair with Bathsheba and murder of her husband.

Hundreds of years later, John wrote a letter to confront the false teachers that questioned everything from the deity of Christ to the sinfulness of human beings. The false teachers’ belief that people could live a sinless life was the occasion for John to write one of the classic passages about forgiveness.

Forgiveness Is a Blessing (Psalm 32:1-2)

The term “blessed” in the Psalms can be translated how rewarding is the life of . . . or happy. These first two verses refer to the joy that can be known when one has experienced forgiveness.

Three different terms in these verses refer to sin, and three different terms refer to forgiveness.

More than likely, the psalmist was not referring to different kinds of sin and forgiveness. Rather he was utilising the parallel style of Hebrew poetry. In Hebrew poetry, one line would restate the meaning of the previous line by using different words.

The first word for sin is “transgressions” and refers to a willful disobedience to a divine command. It refers to deliberately rebelling against God. The second word, translated “sins,” refers to missing that which is aimed at. It is NOT an accidental miss, but rather, it is deliberate. The third word, also translated “sin” in the NIV (“iniquity” in NASB and NRSV), means crookedness or going astray. It can refer to the effects of sin.

The first expression for forgiveness uses a verb that means to carry or to bear. It paints a picture of sin as a burden that can be lifted from the back of the sinner and carried away. The second term, “covered,” means to cover up something that is offensive. This idea reminds us of the ugliness of our sin. The third phrase, “does not count against him,” refers to the release of a debt. God no longer holds the sinner accountable for his or her transgressions.

A person who has no deceit in his or her spirit is a person who honestly realizes that sin is indeed sin. There is no attempt to excuse wrong behaviour.

These vivid word pictures help us understand the magnificent grace of God in carrying away, covering up, and releasing us from our sin. This is why a person is “blessed” when this happens. Being forgiven is cause for celebration.

What the Bible Says to Me

Is forgiveness something you take for granted? We are eager to seek God’s forgiveness, but how often do we rejoice over God’s grace and mercy? The next time you ask for forgiveness, offer thanks for that which you receive.

Teenagers can be very hard on themselves because of their sin. Many times, a young believer feels anything but “blessed” when he or she must repent and seek forgiveness.

Silence Hurts (Psalm 32:3-5)

The next three verses could be interpreted in two different ways. Either the psalmist has not sought forgiveness and the result is a psychosomatic condition in which he thinks he is sick, or the psalmist has some physical illness that he believes is punishment for unconfessed sin.

32:3. When the psalmist “kept silent,” that is, refused to confess his sin, things began to deteriorate. The phrase should not be taken literally, since bones are the last part of the body to disintegrate. This is a picture of a person without hope, whether physically or spiritually. Today, we might say that things are falling apart. Indeed, refusing to talk to God about a particular sin can lead to all kinds of emotional unbalances. The lack of confession takes a toll on every part of our lives.

32:4. The poet experienced anguish around the clock. He felt that God was punishing him. As a result, he lost the stamina to continue life. The word for “sapped” literally means absence of moisture. Just as working in the summer heat leaves one feeling lethargic and without energy, so unconfessed sin leaves one with the spiritual blahs and no energy to enjoy life.

32:5. Such a state of despair and depression caused the author to realize what must be done.
He could no longer “cover up” his sin, or hide it from God. Of course, the sin was never really hidden. We have no sins that surprise God. Confession is not telling God what God does not already know. Rather, confession is simply agreeing with God that our actions are indeed sin. The phrase “guilt of my sin” may refer to the sickness that the author had experienced as a result of sin. Indeed, it may have been the “guilt” that caused the conditions mentioned in verses 3 and 4.

What the Bible Says to Me

How does unconfessed sin affect you? For some it can range from depression to a lack of joy. Many times, we try to treat the ailments with everything but acknowledgment of our sin. This verse should not be interpreted to mean that every physical, mental, or emotional problem is the result of unconfessed sin. However, we must acknowledge that our spiritual health does play a role in our physical and emotional well-being.

Youth often try to “cover” their sins. They may be good at hiding their wrongs from teachers, parents, and even peers. This may lead some into thinking that they have successfully “pulled one over” on God as well. They need to understand that acknowledging their sin is for their sake rather than for God’s sake.

Confession Feels Good (1 John 1:8-10)

1:8. Evidently people in the first century AD had the same problem as people in the twenty- first century. They did not believe they were sinners. Perhaps this was one of the false teachings that John was writing to counteract. False teachers may have been teaching that Christ’s death on the cross abolished all sin, including our tendency to sin. Some in that day taught that the body and spirit were so separate that nothing one did in the flesh could affect the spirit. Therefore, while people might sin, it didn’t count in their spiritual life. Of course, such teachings were wrong. John said that those who believed such nonsense were fooling themselves. Teaching contrary to God’s word involves deception.

We all sin. That simple truth is taught throughout the Bible. John said that those who reject this truth are merely deceiving themselves. If a person could be sinless, then Jesus Christ would not have had to die on the cross. At the heart of the gospel is this truth of how much people need the grace of God, a need we have because of our sin. John’s well-known remarks about confession in verse 9 must be understood in the context of verse 8.

1:9. To confess our sin means to agree with God that our action or thought is indeed wrong. Confession is an acknowledgement that we see sin the same way God sees it. Confession is a necessity to an ongoing relationship with God. Confession provides freedom. When we confess, God will forgive us. God does so because of God’s faithfulness and justice. God’s faithfulness means that God is dependable, trustworthy, and will keep his promise to forgive. We do not confess hoping that God might hear and might choose to forgive. Rather we have the assurance that God will forgive. This verse is a promise that believers refer to time after time again. God’s justice requires that our sin be paid for with a death. This is why Jesus Christ had to die in our place.

In addition to forgiveness, we experience purification. The word translated “purifies” speaks not only of cleansing but also of restoration. When we confess, God forgives and restores us to fellowship. This truth reminds us of how dirty sin can leave us and of how clean we need to be around God.

1:10. For those who would argue the simple truth of verse 9, John once again repeated the important truth that all have sinned. His assertion is stronger the second time. He now said that people who deny that they sin not only are deceiving themselves but are also calling God a “liar.” The false teachings about people not sinning did not come from God’s word, and thus those who believe such things do not have God’s word in their lives. People cannot be forgiven if they do not realize this basic truth, that they need forgiveness.

What the Bible Says to Me

Are there activities, thoughts, motivations, or desires in your life that you try to justify as not being sin? Many times, people who teach Sunday School, attend church regularly, and do not engage in self-destructive habits tend to compare their lives to other people and come out looking pretty good. It’s tempting to think, I don’t have any sin in my life. These verses were not written to pagans who partied every week, but rather to believers in the church. Have you fully realized the amount of sin in your life? Do you regularly practice confession to God?

You may have youth in your next Bible study session who have not acknowledged their sin before God for the very first time. They may still view sin as what the other person has a problem with, not themselves. Other youth will already be believers, but they may not recognize their need for confession of sin. They see their sin as a pattern they cannot break and their guilt as something they must learn to live with. They need to understand how confession leads to forgiveness and cleansing.

Quiet Time:
Imagine a chalkboard. Think of a particular sin in your life and write it on the chalkboard. Ask God to forgive you of that sin. Imagine God’s hand erasing that sin with a big eraser :)

Is confession a part of your daily prayer life?

Every time you wash your face or hands this week, utter a prayer of confession, asking God to forgive you of a specific sin. At the end of each day, record the number of times you remember asking for forgiveness that particular day.
